I found this gorgeous bracelet at a newly opened consignment store on Mechanicsville turnpike. The store itself wasn't very impressive, but its stock of hand made jewelry was to die for. I'm a sucker for cameo pendants and they had several styles to choose from. I might be back for another bracelet if my NYC trip doesn't supply something as appealing.

NYC bound

Headed to New York City in just a few days, admittedly I'm not as excited as I should be. Usually I get really amped up about going on trips, but lately all I've had on my mind has been money. Even though I have a good backing in my bank account, I still am nervous about spending to much. However, I'm sure when i meet up with my friends January 1st I'll get pumped up. I'm heading to NYC with my good friends Nina, Phil, and Danielle. Even though I'm weary of spending, I know once I get in town I won't be able to resist shopping. Below are some of the things I'll be on the lookout for this time around in the CD.

looks I love

There's something about a bright cardigan that calls me towards it. Touching soft cashmere, or crisp cotton, sets my conservative heart aflame. However, I'm learning now that I can own every color in the rainbow worth of cardigans, but without the undershirt they're pointless. I've just gotten into a little show called "Glee", and I'm enthralled with the fashions exhibited on the show. Particularly that of counselor, Emma. Her neatly (the character has OCD) constructed, color coordinated, conservative style has my heart fluttering, and my wallet racing to J.Crew.

Inspired by her style, I just went on a shopping spree in the clearance section of j.crew. Here's what I bought.

Got this classic turtle neck for those cold winter days. It will look great under my boy friend blazer!
I've been waiting for these beautiful necklace t-shirts to go on sale. Finally!
This is one of those spur of the moment purchases. I'm not really sure when I'll ever where it, but I love the bright yellow color. The price was rather low for j.crew so I just couldn't help snagging this jacket up for only $39!

Got some basic t-shirts as well.
Can't wait for them to come in the mail!

weekly muse

Afton Reed

19
Theatre- Acting (CNU)
Mechanicsville, VA

I've seen this fashionista transform over the years. I'm impartial to her style, because it so closely mirrors my own. Its rare to find someone who connects with you on such an emotional and inspirational level. Miss Reed is not only one of my best friends, she is one of the most fashionable and stylish people I know. Here's what she has to say.

If you had a magic time machine, what fashion decade would you go to and why?

After seeing "Miss Pettigrew lives for a day" I've really wanted to live in the 40's. Everyone dresses so extravagantly on a regular basis.

Is there one piece of clothing that you currently are obsessed with and can't stop wearing?

Ironically enough the one piece of clothing I can't get enough of is a one piece.Jumping for Jumpers!! Although it's hard to find flattering ones, and they make it challenging to use the restroom, when you find the right one it's totally worth it.

If you had money for one thing from urban outfitters right now, what would you get?Boy friend blazers are feminine and sophisticated and look so cute with a low cut top. This may not be my absolute favorite thing at urban right now, but I've definitely had my eye on it for a while.

Have you watched any movie, heard any music or read any book that has inspired you recently?

The last movie I saw in theaters that really inspired me was whip it. Even though I don't usually go for the grunge look, the girls in that movie pulled it off really well. Ellen Paige was charming in her over sized t- shirt and gigantic boots!! The movie even inspired me to purchase my very own roller skates and dress like a girl scout, or hurl scout if you will.

If you had to describe your image (style) in one word, what would it be?

Becky Bingham once described my style as romantic. That sounds good to me.

What is your least favorite fashion trend/clothing item that people are wearing nowadays?

hm...this is only opinion, please take no offense to my dislike of crocs and beanies with visors.

(Here's a hard one)
So I know your an actor, what roles do you think fashion plays in show-business?

Well, when you go into an audition I think a person who has a creative style stands out more than a person who has a T-shirt and jeans on. It’s all about the “it” factor. “The look” has a lot to do with casting, and style has a lot to do with your look. For instance, Zooey Deschanel stands out because she has a different style that makes her appear unique, prettier and cuter. It gives her that “it” factor that people want to watch. So I try to use fashion to enhance my chances at standing out. Every girl wants to stand out and be that “it” girl.

best color combo ever

If you know me well, then you know my favorite color combination is black, white, teal or crimson pink. So the outfit I wore yesterday was everything I love.

Stole the cardigan from mi madre (who was going to sell it to a thrift store!). Great Faux watch necklace from my best friend Afton.

gee I think you're swell

It is very hard for me to go home for the weekend and not shop. Richmond has some of the best shopping in Virginia. For Carry town (Need Supply, American Apparel, Bygones) to Short Pump (J.Crew, Urban Outfitters, South Moon Under). I have to fight my self to keep my wallet full.
So when I went home on Monday for a doctors appointment, my willpower and I had an all out brawl. I packed my bags Sunday night with the intentions of going to Plato's closet to may some money, then hit up Urban. But when I got home, and began to consider my finances I decided against the shopping spree. I'm trying to save money for New York City in December, and for Christmas presents. The fight was neither successful or unsuccessful. I didn't go to Plato's or Urban, but I couldn't help stopping by the local thrift store. Mechanicsville (my hometown) does one thing right. We have the best Goodwill in the state. It's clean, cheap and ever changing. Here are some of my scores from my Monday thrifting adventure.

Found this beautiful Moda New York cardigan hanging on the unwanted rack by the fitting room. Look at the beautiful detailing. It looks brand new!
Then I found this awesome boyfriend blazer. I don't know the brand, but its pretty old and in good condition. Lately I've been staying away from the blazer section, because I think the boyfriend blazer trend is getting a little played out, but for a unique one like this I could help it. You can't tell from this picture but its a really light material. Not bulky in shape, is fits the body. Its got a golden sheen with a great swirling pattern.

I've got my new shoes on

Finally got my tan/nude shoes that I've been searching for forever! Since I was in theater in high school I've wanted a pair of shoes like the ones below. They are the type of shoes you can wear what ever you want! They also will instantly lengthen my legs when worn with a skirt or dress. Its so hard to find cute heels in a size 11, but these were found courtesy of Urban Outfitters. I'm thinking about getting them in the blue as well. Then I'll officially have a pair of Blue Suede shoes!

casting call

What girl doesn't dream of being a beautiful model or a girl who commands a rooms attention? Today I got my chance.
I woke up this morning with one goal. To go to a model casting call which I had heard was taking place at school. I didn't know if I'd get my nerves up to do it. So I called two of my model-esque friends, and asked if they'd accompany me. They couldn't. When time came for the auditions to begin I packed my heals in my book bag and took a deep breath as I climbed the stairs towards the audition room. I wasn't as nervous as I thought I might be. Possibly, because I knew two of the judges, but mostly because I knew that I had nothing to lose. I was doing this for myself. It was something I had only dreamt about.
The hardest part of modeling is having the confidence in yourself to do it. I know during the audition I mentioned my nerves, my inexperience... something I probably shouldn't have done , but its my way of admitting my faults before others can point them out.
Overall, I think I walked well and presented my self in a nice manner. I hope I get a spot, but if not I'm glad for the experience.

Today the fashion association met to create tee-shirts for the homecoming parade on Saturday. The theme is "first & goal", so we decided to be "fashion referees". We used spray paint to create the stripes and the graffiti style.

Got this really awesome necklace from modcloth.com.
It is one of my favorite new pieces. Traveling and seeing the world is something that I cherish and dream about.

Found this really awesome image on google. I DID NOT MAKE THIS!

Its a mixed media poster. Painted, with lace/doilies overlaid and the font is fabric. It's in French!! How cute is that? <3

T-T-Tia

In efforts to expand my following I've unofficially contracted my first muse (Brandie) as a street style freelance interviewer. Here's her first write-up.

Tia Ballinger
Hometown: Baltimore, MD
Age: 19
Major: Communications

How would you describe your personal style?
"I would say that my style is edgy, but classy, but laid back (Tia says with a chuckle)"

What is your favorite outfit, or should I say, the outfit you feel most confident/comfortable in?
"On the weekends, sometimes during the week when it is time for a girl's night out on the town! I love when the time comes to kick off the flats, throw on a pair of heels, and slip into something snazzy!" I have this comical expression on my face as if I wanted to say, "Right on Tia!" She was making me excited

What is your favorite TV show?

"The Game, Fresh Prince, and The Hills." Lauren and Heidi's wardrobes are definitely something I would consider holding hostage. Just joking?

Where are some of your favorite places to shop?

"Bebe, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, and H&M."

Where do you get your inspiration and how do you keep up with the latest trends?

"Mostly magazines. The internet is also another source, which features and keeps me posted on all the new trends. As far as inspiration, most of the time I just put my imagination to work. I love coming up with my own stuff!"

What is one classic piece you think will never go out of style?

"Different prints" like the leopard print cardigan she is rocking today! I agree, leopard print is always in style (if used in moderation). Add a print to your outfit with small touches like leopard flats, a scarf or if you're brave try the fur coat! (Which is super hot this season. I've already got mine!)
What do you look forward to for Fall/Winter 2009?

"This Louis Vuitton bag I saw on "The Hills"! It is definitely on my Christmas List, so cross your fingers. Hopefully it does not have to make my birthday list, which is all the way in March!" Let's cross our fingers for the uniting of Tia and her dream bag. F-a-b-u-l-o-u-s!

mind control

Hey you! Yes, You! Look to the left of your screen. Now scroll down!
I've added three new blogs which I think are "follow" worthy. Check them out, each is unique and inspirational in their own way.
The "Sea of Shoes" blog is specifically noteworthy. The owner started off by blogging about her love/obsession with shoes. Now she is co-designing a shoe line for Urban Outfitters!
WHAT????!!!
Crazy right.
Dead serious.
Take a look at her blog.

I know I ought to be paying attention in class but I'm far to excited. We're watching Samuel Beckett's "Endgame" in my theater class, and the whole second act I've been window shopping at my new favorite site modcloth.com. (thanks Caitlin). They have a really cool feature which you can be the buyer and chose what clothes they should sell! Needless to say I've been clicking away for the past hour. Here are some of my favorite items for sale from Modcloth.com

I can't wait for my new camera to come in. I paid $30 for rush shipping so hopefully it will be here by Halloween. It has a dual LCD screen which will allow me to post more photos of my outfits. I bought the camera on eBay for $280, and in store it averages $330!

adventures

Had a really good time exploring VA with my mom this past weekend. I was in the mood for antique shopping so we headed to Historic Fredricksburg which is near the heart of Mary Washington University. Please disregard the crappy photography. My camera is at its wits end.

During our adventure I stumbled upon this unexpected treasure in an antique store. I've been looking for a leather bookbag for sometime now. I wanted a bag which would last forever, and I've found it!
Its a vintage all weather leather Dooney and Bourke back pack! Beautiful tan leather, deep pockets and brass attachments. Only $85! This is a $200+ bag!!!
Needless to say I'm very Happy. I wore it to classes this morning for the first time and got several positive comments!

Mom modeling a real raccoon skin hat.
Me working a vintage (1960s) mod cap. To bad it was to small, it was really cute.
Heaven on earth. Vintage shopping cellar.
Funny painting.

I love how this painting is displayed.

A purse made out of a book!
Going to try and create one of these for the spring Fashion show. I need to find an Alice in Wonderland book.

plaid

Wore this outfit on Tuesday, and got a ton of unexpected compliments. I bought this colorful plaid shirt for only $12 at H&M. I'm a t-shirt and jeans girl at heart. I love being comfortable, but one shouldn't sacrifice fashion for comfort. So I paired my new color block tee with my favorite cardigan. (Which is from UO, but I got at Plato's closet) This fall is all about combining textures like tweeds, knits and cottons to create depth. Charcoal skinny jeans, black pointed flats and a long costume jewelry necklace complete the outfit. (Necklace is also from H&M)

Brandie Taylor

Street Beat ODU

Full Name: Brandie Taylor

Nick Name: Beanie

Major: human services

From: Capron (aka the country) VA

When I first met Brandie Taylor I knew that this girl had style. Instead of the usual drab moving in boxes, Brandie had zebra print suitcases. I know I have several subscribers to my blog, but Brandie was the first to make a comment about any of my blogging. So I decided to use her as my guinea pig for the new street style section of Frockstar Threads. Here's what she has to say:

Where's your nick name Beanie come from?

"Well I wear beanies all the time. In fact I have this Jamaican beanie...well its kind of random...I guess I should just say that my brothers girl friend gave it to me."

How would you describe your style?

"I like clothes that are, what's the word? Interchangeable." (If I had to describe her look it would be eclectic) "Clothing and accessories should be versatile. The necklace I'm wearing today actually a belt!" (She has on a beautiful copper chain belt/necklace with large flower like metal faces.)

Where are some of your favorite places to shop?

"Thrift stores." (I have to make a thrifting date with her and my other thrift store lovers...Alyssa) "H & M" and every girls favorite "Forever-21."

How do you stay on top of the latest trends?

Brandie is hesitant to answer. Its a hard question. I don't think I could name just one thing. I'm inspired by magazines, music, and even just walking outside on a cool fall day. I try and give her examples like movies, blogs, TV. She laughs.

"I watch golden girls a lot."

"Golden girls? Really?" I reply. (I've never scene an episode, but I get the gist of it)

"It inspires the more vintage and antique-ish (made up word) part of my style."

In your opinion what is a classic piece that will never go out of style?

"The little black dress. Black clothes in general."

I certainly agree with her black is always chic. I love pairing black leggings with a black turtle neck for the ever classic Audrey in Funny Face look.

What is the one thing you can wait to wear this fall?

"A leather jacket, and I would love the new red Louie Vuitton bag. "

Have any trends caught your eye lately?

"The jean shorts with tights trend that you mentioned in your blog. I also love the look of cotton turtle neck dresses and peep-toe-boots!"
